Here is a scarce American Flyer hopper in the American Flyer Line.
You USUALLY see this one in a light or dark gray. Finding it in the almost white shade is a nice catch. This is the car referred to as the "white" version, but some call it off white, some call it very light gray. To me, it is kind of a dirty white.
Here is what is interesting: This one has an early Type 1 truck side which was made 1946-1948ish. Since the "American Flyer" version 640 was not made until 1949, this might be a very early version of the car. In addition, the truck tops are die cast metal, not sheet metal like the sides. And the coupler is a 1947 (and probably into 48) style link coupler with no weight yet.
Of course, perhaps it is possible that these could have been screwed on as replacements?
