Here is a Lionel #116 ballast hopper from 1910-1926. It is really a manually operating hopper with a lever that releases the ballast out the chute on the bottom.
Did you know that there are four primary versions of this car (and of course, many more within that).
THIS car is Type 3, variation L in the Greenberg classifications.
That means:
- Lionel Corp era (no stamping vs the Lionel Mfr embossing)
- Has CAPACITY 50000 LBS on the left (versus 80000 LBS)
- Has WEIGHT 30000 LBS on the right (versus 35000 on some versions)
- Is the DARK GRAY body version
Do you have this version? Be sure you have them all!
Sure to be an attention-getter in the prewar collection.
CONDTION: C6-. One side has more scratches than the other. One side has nice paint. Printing is legible both sides and a little harder to read on the end. Lever works, opens bottom chute. Surface rust on couplers and wheels, but this is the easiest part to clean or replace!
