You are looking at a Louis Marx Steam freight set from 1939. This is an interesting speciman. It is NOT in the Greenberg Hardback for Marx train sets. There is one similar, but it is an airport. This style was also used for a version of the army train--it is a barracks. THIS one is a Marlines freight station, complete with a dock that attaches to the building via some slots. NOT often seen. This set was uncatalogued.
The contents include the beautiful streamlined "3000" steam locomotive with the chrome front that has always been one of my favorites. WOW. And it pulls five classic tinplate cars, all in great shape. PLUS there are a fex extras here.
The set includes
- (497) "3000" 0-4-0 steam locomotive
- Canadian Pacific tender
- 552G Rock Island CRIP gondola, tan
- 554 Northern Pacific hopper
- 548 Gurnsey Milk gondola with insert but no cans
- (574) Barrel car
- 556 New York Central caboose
2-4-2 "3000" STEAM ENGINE
It was actually catalogued as 497. The engine has that stunning chrome boiler front. You can see some scratches in the chrome. The roof on the cab is also chrome. Colorful sideboards with "3000" that matches the tender colors. Chrome tear drop top, red insert, speckled headlight. There are some scratches here and there and a little bit of handling wear, but it is nice.,
Rolling stock are all Six Inch tinplate, eight wheel. Prewar Automatic "one-way" coupler. All of them have some oxidation on the truck journals.
CANADIAN PACIFIC TENDER
The tinplate tender looks good. There are a few scratches on the tender as you can see. Some light handling wear. Excellent.
552G ROCK ISLAND CRI&P GONDOLA
Has minor paint knicks, some oxidation spots/ tarnish wear (one on the outside end near the 552G and one area inside). Still, a nice car. C6
554 NORTHERN PACIFIC RED/YELLOW HOPPER
Some light scratches here and there, but strong patina. C7
548 GURNSEY MILK GONDOLA
Some light scratches and knicks. No cans. Has the insert. I am not 100% sure the insert is original.
574 FLAT CAR WITH BARRELS
Scratches on the flat car, especially on the flat top. Wire railing is here. With all the original barrels. C6
555 COLORADO & SOUTHERN BOXCAR, RED AND CREAM
Version with red roof and cream sides. Opening doors. Scratches and wear. Yough car to find!! C6.
556 NEW YORK CENTRAL CABOOSE
Minor oxidation on couplers, some scratches. This one is closer to C6 than C6.
THE SET BOX
is all here, structurally soft. Edges, flaps, etc are soft and soiled. it is especially soft where the flaps for the end eaves, BUT it DOES make a nice slanted roof. It is all here. Lots of barn dirt on the inside cardboard. The top does have some spots and softness. A few tears. mainly on edges and corners. Measures 23" x 12" x 6" high when folded down.
BUT WAIT...THERE IS MORE:
- Transformer (ROUGH with a cord so dry, we may cut it for shipping))
- PAIR of remote control switches
- Control panel
- one red handcart (dolly)
