This version of the GM EMD car is thought to be one of only twelve in existence. This car is so rare that it is not included in most of the informative references. It IS in the more recent Pocket Guides as well as in "The Authoritative Guide to Lionel's Postwar Operating Cars". The underlined version is found exclusively in the big Rio Grande F3 set. According to "The Authoritative Guide to Lionel's Postwar Operating Cars" by Joe Algozinni and Emanuel Piazza, fewer than twelve cars with this variation exist.
You are looking at a SCARCE version of a true Lionel classic--this is the 3530 General Motors EMD generator car that has the extended searchlight with the utility pole for all that extra working on the railroad. This is the original classic from the late 1950's. There are a number of different versions of the car. Make sure you have them all: colors of generator, pole, white stripe length, etc.
- UNDERSCORED number
- long white stripe
- blue tank
- orange generator
- black base on pole
CONDITION: Car is a strong C6. Has been on the tracks. The light works, but upon initial testing, the generator fan did not whirr. Good printing. There are some oxidation spots on the bottom axles. A few paint smudges and small scratches. There is some discoloration on one of the doors visible in the pictures keeping it from C-7. Some of the lettering has faded a little. Overall, though, a nice looking car. The UNDERLINE is great.
The BOX is easily P7 maybe better. It is structurally strong with the insert. Not sure you can find a better box.
NOTE: Shipping includes signature confirmation and insurance.
