SCARCE Lionel TEXAS LONGHORNS National Championship woodsided reefer
This is a custom produced Lionel woodside reefer from the early MPC era. This car started life as either a blank shell or another of the woodside reefers in the series. Carver Trains and Hardware commissioned these cars, and they were sold through the store on a very limited basis. This one was custom painted and offered ONLY through Carver Trains and Hardware in a series they produced call Trains of Champions.
THIS car celebrates the University of Texas 1969 Football National Champions. That was the amazing year capped off with thge presentation of the award by President Richard Nixon after the victory versus Arkansas in what has been called the Game of the Century. Using the wishbone it had perfected, Texas was undefeated that year.
Here are some neat details:
- The number is the score from the January 1, 1970 Cotton Bowl victory over Notre Dame, 21-17
- 1-1-70 Commemorates the date of that Cotton Bowl win
- 11-0 is that year's record
- You can see the number one in the UT Tower graphic. UT lights up its Main Tower with the number one when it has a National Championship in any sport.
The orange and white are the school colors, although this orange is tinted a hair brighter orange than UT's trademark Burnt Orange.
