Here is a Lionel #116 ballast hopper from 1910-1926. It is really a manually operating short hopper with a lever that releases the ballast out the chute on the bottom. This car is one of the more unusual ones from the era--something not made postwar.
These look great in a long line--a ballast train--on the layout!!!
Did you know that there are MANY versions of this car ? My best guess is that this is a MAROON specimen, but there was also a red-brown version...take a look at the pics...we report, you decide.
THIS car features:
-
Is the Maroon body version (or red-brown?)
-
Has BLACK PRINT
- Has the top edge rolled in a "teardrop rim" with
-
Same color paint on top rim
-
Red paint on handle (still visible)
-
TYPE 3 DATA LINES:
- Has CAPACITY 50000 LBS on the left (versus 80000 LBS)
- Has WEIGHT 30000 LBS on the right (versus 35000 on some versions)
Do you have this version? Be sure you have them all!
Sure to be an attention-getter in the prewar collection.
CONDITION: C6-/ C-5+. Complete. Lever works the chutes. Lots of scratches. The printing is pretty good on this one--usually faded. Complete couplers, trucks, and wheels, all of which are clean.
