You are looking at a STUNNING and beautiful Dreyfuss Hudson crafted in BRASS with no die cast according to Lionel. It has all of the features you would expect, and comes with a special display case with rollers for stationary operation.
This engine was modeled after the famous streamlined J3a Hudson designed by Henry Dreyfuss and made iconic by the New York Central 20th Century Limited.
This engine was offered through the Smithsonian, advertised in their magazine, as a special historical limited run. Lionel produced three versions, all numbered #5450 (despite what one famous Guide Book says!): 6-18026 in a two rail model; 6-18027, and then 6-18029 which was identical to the 6-18027 but it includes the stationary roller base.
The letter included here from Lionel suggests that this item, as a very early production number, shipped without tinplate flanged front and rear wheels. Lionel assured the buyer that the wheels would come, along with a neat wooden box. I believe that the 6-18029 refers to the box and flanged wheels that came separately for these engines.
Note that the box here has BOTH numbers on the box--one on each end!
This lot comes with everything you see--original boxes for the engine and tender, as well as the original box for the display case and rollers.

BOXES are here and are in excellent shape showing some minor shelfwear. One label on the end of the plain brown box has a small stain. Some shelfwear runs here and there on the boxes.
