You are looking at the iconic Lionel Postwar Texas Special set, an A unit and B unit. Numbered 2245, the Texas Special F3s were produced by Lionel in 1954-55. THIS version is the 1954 set with the portholes in the B unit and the horizontal motor. Check out the pics below of the super clean motor and whistle area!
The Texas Special was the first Lionel F3 to be produced with a single motor, but it is still powerful coming equipped with Magnetraction.

NOSE GRAB IRONS: Interesting! I am not sure if the grab irons are factory or were added by a previous owner. Lionel did not use grab irons on the nose after around 1952, so either this A unit shell was used at the factory from old inventory which would have had the holes for the nose grab irons, or a previous owner added them. Either way, they look GREAT! There are pictures of the inside of the shell below.
Features:
- A unit with motor
- Magnetraction
- Portholes,
- Operating horn,
- Die-cast metal trucks
- Operating headlight,
- Three position reverse
- Operating knuckle couplers
- Silver trucks
CONDITION: Just serviced. Runs and honks. Battery compartment is clean. Does have some scratches and a few rubs here and there from normal playwear. To be very critical: Some paint chips, white is a little aged, a few red paint touch ups on the powered A top and front, one horn has a small bent part, oxidation on metal frame. Pictures show it all! We call it C-6 Very Good though some would still call C-7 excellent. Overall, does look nice. Complete!
