You are looking at a classic steam engine from the earliest days of Lionel Trains. While production of the #5 started as early as 1906, I believe this one to be the later version from around 1918 to as late as the early 1920s. This one has the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad locomotive with the scarcer Pennsylvania tender.
As you can see, it needs some cosmetic attention. Still, a scarce item.
There are a few variations of this locomotive. THIS ONE is:
- Strap Headlight on the boiler
- Light kit installed on tender
- Pennsylvania tender
- Thicker wheels
CONDITION: Tested and runs, reverses. E-unit lever seems a little loose, but it works. I noticed a little wobble when it is running, so that will need to be addressed. Has not run in a long time, so the engine needs lubrication, etc to run smoothly.
Cosmetically has oxidation on boiler; missing the boiler front; missing bell on boiler top. Strap headlight fixture is in place, but no headlight or wiring present. Some bending to cab roof. You can see some modern washers on the bottom, so clearly this one has been worked on its long life. Not sure if any of the red has been repainted. Stamping is faded but visible. Chip out of smokestack. Gold stamping on bottom of the tender looks good. Overall, C-5-. Has all couplers.
