Some of the most ingenious men in railroading were those of the Maintenance of Way Department. They turned worn out freight cars into valuable tools that kept the line clear. On railroads with cold winters, ice was a major concern. A falling icicle could smash through a dome car or shatter a locomotive windshield. Icebreaker Tunnel Cars were built to prevent such accidents by knocking the icicles from tunnel roofs.
